Dogs live in a world made of scent, not sight. With up to 300 million scent receptors and a brain wired to interpret them, your dog can read a person’s story in a single sniff. The groin area is rich in apocrine glands, which release chemical signals about sex, age, mood, hormonal shifts, and even aspects of health. For your dog, going there first is simply the most efficient way to “meet” someone.
That doesn’t mean you have to accept every intrusive sniff. You can respect your dog’s instincts while protecting people’s comfort. Calmly call your dog away, ask for a “sit,” reward eye contact, or offer a hand to sniff instead. On leash, you can control the greeting without punishment or shame. When you see it as instinct, not misbehavior, you can guide your dog gently—and feel a little awe at what that nose can do.
