Maj. Gen. John L. Rafferty Jr. has been confirmed by
the U.S. Senate for promotion and will lead the U.S. Army Space and
Missile Defense Command, a role placing him at the center of efforts to improve missile defense and space security.
This step marks a major point in a career spanning more than three decades.
Rafferty currently serves as chief of staff at U.S. European Command in
Germany and brings over 33 years of experience in field artillery, leadership, and strategic planning.
His past roles include commanding general of the 56th Artillery Command, chief of Army Public Affairs, and commander of the 18th Field Artillery Brigade.
He also contributed to key initiatives like the Long Range Precision Fires Cross Functional Team.
Throughout his service, he supported major operations including
“Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, Spartan Shield, and Inherent Resolve,”
building a reputation as a skilled and experienced leader.
He will replace Lt. Gen. Sean A. Gainey, who is retiring after more than 35 years.
The leadership change comes at a time of rising global tensions and increasing focus on advanced defense technologies.
His confirmation is part of a broader Senate effort, where “Senate Republicans recently confirmed nearly 100 nominees in a 53–43 vote,”
contributing to a total of 417 confirmed appointments this year.
